Where to find Missouri census records, immigration records, land records, maps, vital records and more.
RECORD HIGHLIGHTS

The first federal census available for the state of Missouri is the 1830. The 1890 census was destroyed, but the 1890 Union Veterans' Schedule survives. The 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Mortality Schedules are also extant.

Statewide registration of births and deaths began in 1863, but it was not mandatory until 1910 (except for 1883-1893, when it was required, but repealed when no one was complying.) Pre-1910 records are available from the county clerk, while later records can be ordered from the Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City. In addition, the Missouri State Archives website has a birth and death records database of 185,000 pre-1910 birth and death records from 87 counties you can search (along with many other types of records) at http://www.sos.mo.gov/mdh/browse.asp?id=8.

Marriage records are kept by county clerks. Statewide registration of marriages began in 1881. The Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City has an index to marriages starting July 1, 1948, and issues certificates of proof of marriage. Copies of actual marriage licenses can be obtained from the county recorder of deeds or from microfilm at the Missouri State Archives. The Family History Library (FHL) has microfilm of marriage licenses from each Missouri county, often up to the 1920s. Divorce records are available from the circuit court clerk for each county, and the Bureau of Vital Records has copies of divorce records from 1948 to the present.

Two county-level courts exist today in Missouri: probate and county. (County courts usually have records for past county-level courts that went by other names: chancery, common-pleas and justice-of-the-peace.) At the district level is the circuit court; 45 judicial circuits cover Missouri's 114 counties. Missouri has had an excellent state archives microfilming program for many years. More than 55,000 rolls of microfilmed county-level records, circuit court civil case files and other significant collections are available for use at the State Archives. The microfilm is available for sale, and much of it is also available through the FHL. You can view the listing of filmed records for any county at the Archives website http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/county/croll.asp.

Naturalization records are generally held by the circuit courts; request them from the clerk's office at the courthouse. You can search an index at http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/naturalization. Some county naturalization records are available through the FHL.

Land records are held by the recorder of deeds in each county. Pre-1900 deeds for almost all Missouri counties are available through the FHL. Probate records are generally maintained by the clerk of the probate court in each county. The FHL has films of probate records for many Missouri counties from the date the county was created to about 1925.

Many Missouri cemetery and church records have been abstracted, indexed or microfilmed, and many original records and church histories are available at archives, historical societies or from the church or cemetery association where they originated. Check the websites and catalogs of major repositories in Missouri, as well as the FHL catalog. For example, the FHL holds microfilmed parish registers of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis, and has alphabetized parish register transcripts from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kansas City covering the years 1830 to 1900.

Newspapers are available at many large libraries, historical societies and colleges. The largest newspaper collection is at the State Historical Society of Missouri in Columbia.
