Any good bookstore will have dozens of books on the Civil War. Among those that expert Albert Hallenberg recommends:

  • The American Heritage New History of the Civil War by Bruce Catton (Viking Books, $50)

  • The Civil War: A Narrative by Shelby Foote (3 volumes, Random House, $150)

  • How the North Won: A Military History of the Civil War by Herman Hattaway and Archer Jones (University of Illinois Press, $21.95)

  • Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era by James M. McPherson (Ballantine Books, $18)

  • An American Iliad: The Story of the Civil War by Charles P. Roland (University Press of Kentucky, $32)

  • America's Civil War (The American History Series) by Brooks C. Simpson (Harlan Davidson, $13.95)

  • The Civil War: An Illustrated History by Geoffrey C. Ward (companion to the PBS-TV series, Knopf, $39.95)

  • Tracing Your Civil War Ancestor by Bertram Groene (John F. Blair Publications, $14.95)

  • Civil War Genealogy by George K. Schweitzer (Genealogical Sources, $12)

  • Trials and Triumphs: Women of the American Civil War by Marilyn Mayer Culpepper (Michigan State University Press, $18.95)

To get a feel for your ancestors' lives during the Civil War, try Everyday Life During the Civil War by Michael J. Varhola (Writer's Digest Books, $16.99), available in bookstores or directly from the Family Tree Magazine bookstore. For insight into Civil War re-enactors, read Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War by Tony Horwitz (Random House, $14); you'll find an interview with Horwitz in our January issue.
