Bring good fortune to your family history search with our 13th annual collection of the 101 Best Websites for genealogy.

findmypast.co.uk $

This go-to site for UK genealogy offers parish records dating to 1538, 24 million-plus passenger lists, vital records indexes from 1837 to 2006, and the most complete UK census collection online (1841 to 1911). New are more than 4 million Welsh parish registers. Complete access runs about $175 a year.

findmypast.ie $

This new Emerald Isle offering from the folks at the British genealogy subscription site got out of the gate fast, with more than 4 million records dating from 1400 through the 1920s. Developed in partnership with Dublin-based Eneclann, the site includes landed estate court records, Griffith’s Valuation, local directories, prison records, migration records, wills and more. Access costs about $88 a year.

FreeBMD

You can search more than 214 million transcribed UK Civil Registration records of births, marriages and deaths from 1837 to 1983 for free at this tireless volunteer site. Sibling sites serve up equally free UK censuses (almost 21 million) and parish records (more than 19 million marriages, baptisms and burials).

National Archives of Ireland

The pot of gold at the end of this genealogical rainbow contains the household returns and ancillary records for the censuses of Ireland of 1901 and 1911. You can search all 32 counties by any category on the census; view your hits as transcriptions or PDFs of the originals.

UK National Archives

Search for records about your British ancestors in the archives’ catalog (sorry, “catalogue”) of 11 million of government documents including those of criminal trials, medieval taxes and family history. If you can’t find answers at the main archives, the Access to Archives search lets you comb through more than 400 other record offices and repositories.

Origins Network  $

This British Isles subscription website (about $88 a year) specializes in hard-to-find records. Highlights include 500 years of will indexes and brick wall-busting Irish records such as the Griffith’s Valuation tax census and the 1851 and 1901 Dublin city censuses.

ScotlandsPeople $

New to this Scottish treasure trove are 1915 Valuations Rolls, joining censuses from 1841 to 1911 and vital records from parish, Catholic and statutory registers in the pay-per-view section. Databases of wills and testaments (1513 to 1901) and coats of arms (1672 to 1907) are free.
