During the 1930s and '40s, the Work Projects Administration's Historical Records Survey put thousands of people to work inventorying and indexing old documents — including state and local birth, marriage and death records. Their efforts resulted in published vital-records inventories such as Guide to Public Vital Statistics Records in Florida and other similarly named tomes.
