Before taking a trip to the National Archives, be sure to visit NARA’s extensive Web site <www.archives.gov>. Use online finding aids such as the Archival Research Catalog <archives.gov/research_room/arc>, Archives Library Information Center’s Online Public Access Catalog <archives.gov/research_room/alic> and the Microfilm Publications Catalog <archives.gov/research_room/alic/research_tools/search_microfilm_catalog.html> to check out NARA’s holdings ahead of time.
Select Publications from the pull-down menu on the NARA home page to read a variety of online research guides and to order others, including Guide to Genealogical Research in the National Archives, 3rd edition and Guide to Federal Records in the National Archives of the United States.
The new Access to Archival Databases system <www.archives.gov/aad> even lets you search more than 50 million records created by 20-plus federal agencies — all from your home computer.
