The Great War was among the most deadly conflicts in human history, resulting in the deaths of more than 9 million combatants and displacing innumerable civilians. It shook the poles of power in Europe, resulting in boundary changes and border mutations that can wreak havoc on your family research. This map compares the formation of Europe before and after World War I, including the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian and the Ottoman empires, concession of German territories, and formation of independent states from areas once in Russia. This redrawing of the map, along with other postwar accords, helped set the stage for a second world war.
