The dedication of the National WWII Memorial <www.wwiimemorial.com> at the Mall in Washington, DC, takes place this Memorial Day weekend — but seating went fast for the four-day Tribute to a Generation celebration’s ticketed events.
The weekend’s highlight is the dedication ceremony on May 29 at 2 p.m., preceded by WWII-era entertainment. Members of the war generation received priority ticketing; those accepted from the waiting list were notified in March.
Likewise, seats for three free Salute to WWII Veterans shows were quickly snatched up; the waiting list has been closed since February. Attendance is limited for a memorial service at Washington National Cathedral, but at press time, event organizers were looking into simulcast viewing locations.
You still can go to the National WWII Reunion <www.folklife.si.edu>, which features entertainment, storytelling, kids’ activities, military exhibits and expert advice on preserving war memorabilia. You don’t need tickets: It’s free and open May 27-30 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the National Mall.
The National WWII Memorial, which has been in the works since President Clinton authorized it in 1993, opened in April.
