It’s frustratingly obvious to you that your ancestor’s birth year was mistranscribed in Ancestry.com’s 1900 census, but you couldn’t do a darn thing about it except send an e-mail and hope somebody paid attention. Until now.

Last August, Ancestry.com released an enhanced image viewer with three new collapsible panels:

  • The index panel below the image shows the transcription for the record.
  • The source panel contains the source citation and information about the data collection.
  • The Member Connect panel lets you see who’s added information to the record and who’s viewed it.
Even better, members now can add information to many fields in records—whether to correct a mistranscribed name or age, or add a woman’s maiden name so she’s easier for the next person to find. The information is immediately viewable to other users; it usually takes four to six weeks to become searchable in Ancestry.com’s index. Here’s how to make changes:

1. Mouse over the appropriate field in the index panel below the record image. Click when you see a pencil.

2. Make sure the field you want to update is selected. Choose a reason for your addition. Type in the new information and click Submit Alternate.

3. Your change shows up in bold italics in the index panel.
