The FamilySearch site <www.familysearch.org>, which launched a year ago to such instant popularity that it temporarily overwhelmed the ability of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to handle the Web traffic, keeps expanding. The free site recently added the LDS church’s Pedigree Resource File, a database of more than 9 million names submitted by individual researchers. Previously, the database was available only on CD-ROM; you still need to buy the inexpensive discs to get full information and downloadable GEDCOM family tree files.
Also new on FamilySearch:
• 16 more geographic regions in the International Genealogical Index

• improved navigation of collaboration lists, which now number more than 100,000
• status of GEDCOM files you’ve submitted
• upgraded version 4.04 of the free Personal Ancestral File genealogy program for Windows
