The New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) has revamped its website and renamed it AmericanAncestors.org to reflect the broad range of its collections.

The new site contains all of NEHGS’ New England and New York articles and resources, as well as regional and ethnic content, such as mid-Atlantic, Irish and African-American materials. The site has a new image viewer for records, an enhanced search engine, faster navigation and searching, and social networking-type profiles for members.

Only NEHGS members ($75 per year) can access most databases and indexes on the site, but its free indexes, how-to articles, genealogy question of the day, NEHGS library catalog and other content are available to anyone.

NEHGS CEO D. Brenton Simons says the society remains committed to its core strength: New England genealogy. “New England will always be our greatest strength and primary focus, as well as our cherished institutional name. The new website will add 25 million New England names to search.”

Five Features Worth Checking Out

  1. Review the search tips for hints to frame your queries appropriately within the new search form.
  2. Identify databases that pertain to your research interests using the Database Catalog, accessible from the Explore tab.
  3. View, zoom in and out and save record images more quickly with a new image viewer.
  4. See photos of NEHGS’ historic headquarters building and library. You’ll find them under the Connect tab: Choose Virtual Tour.
  5. Read the Daily Genealogist blog for news about the society and general genealogy tips. Link to it from NEHGS News.
