Q. Are there online records of Canadian deaths and births? I have a lot of grandparents from Ontario.

A. An excellent, free resource for Ontario birth and death records is The Olive Tree Genealogy: Canada Births, Deaths and Marriages Exchange. You can search this site for records alphabetically or view registrations by year.

FamilySearch.org also has many free databases for Canadian provinces, including indexes to Ontario births and deaths. You’ll want to track down the source of the information you find in the index. Subscription site Ancestry.ca has a database of Ontario birth, marriage and death records from the Archives of Ontario and from church records.

You can borrow microfilmed  Ontario birth records through 1914, marriages through 1929 and deaths through 1939 from the Archives of Ontario. See the archives’ website for details. This article from the Global Gazette also provides information on the vital records available through the Archives of Ontario.

You’ll find other Ontario-related records, such as censuses, land and immigration records, on the Library and Archives Canada website.
