Q. As a beginner, how can I send my family tree from my computer to my new Web site?

A. There are different ways to send your Web page from your computer to your Web site. A lot depends on what software you are using to create the family tree in the first place.

If you are using Family Tree Maker, then you will need to register and upload your page. This is all done using the Family Tree Maker software.

If you have used another genealogy program, then your genealogy software saved the pages to your hard drive. You will need a file transfer program. When the files are uploaded from your computer to the Internet, it is done using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). One of the easiest to use is CuteFTP at http://www.cuteftp.com which will remember your password and streamline everything for you. It costs $39.95.

Generally, your Internet Service Provider, or the provider of your Web space, will have an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page that gives you pertinent information on settings in your FTP program so that you can connect to your corner of their server and upload your Web pages.
