Although it’s a tremendous resource, the Periodical Source Index (PERSI) doesn’t catalog every name in every journal, and most citations on HeritageQuest Online won’t link to digitized articles for some time. Fortunately, every-name indexes and digital images of several major genealogical journals already have been published online. Altogether, these resources let you search quickly through millions of names in thousands of pages.
The American Genealogist
Each issue of the journal The American Genealogist features well-researched family histories with thousands of names and families featured. The New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) has a searchable, indexed database volumes 9 to 88 (1932 to 2016) on its website AmericanAncestors.org. The indexed database is free to search, however to view digitized pages, you must have a membership to NEHGS ($34.95/3-months; $99.95/year). Digitized copies of The American Genealogist published in 1961 and before are available on the Internet Archive for free here.
The Mayflower Descendant
Mayflower Descendant was published by the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants beginning in 1899. In 2015, the NEHGS took over publishing of the journal. In addition to compiled genealogies, it also includes transcriptions and abstracts of wills, deeds, vital records and other original documents. The database is accessible on AmericanAncestors.org and includes volumes 1 to 69 (1899 to 1935, 1937 and 1985-2021; the journal was not published in 1936 or between 1938 and 1984). Volumes 1 to 69 include more than 350,000 records, plus the first five volumes of Pilgrim Notes and Queries reference a total of about 200,000 names. The indexed database is free to search, however to view digitized pages, you must have a membership to NEHGS ($34.95/3-months; $99.95/year). Volumes 1 to 25 are digitized and freely viewable on the Internet Archive.
